In the summer months, the red stags can be seen in quite large groups, with the ages sometimes ranging from the older’Royals’, even’Emperors’, down to the younger three- and four-year-olds. They are grazing harmoniously together whilst building up their muscles and strength, before the rut begins in September. This quiet time may allow some demarcation in the hierarchy of the dominant males as they move to gather suitable females. This tolerance is soon to be over, when they quite. The Male stags literally go head to head in their battle for supremacy, the rut, when each stag sees off any encroachment on their harems. The stronger the stag, the more females he can hold and even take more for his own. The scene depicts less of a battleground, more of a’summer camp.
